The Little Interview with Megan Davidhizar - Silent Sister

Banner Silent Sister

ABOUT THE STORY

Grace can't remember what caused her sister Maddy's disappearance from an exclusive senior trip at their expensive private school, and even the police think she’s lying. But it’s hard to look innocent with a missing girl’s blood on your clothes… Now, without her memories of the trip, Grace must piece together notebook entries and classmates’ revelations to discover how her sister disappeared. And unless Grace can find out what happened to Maddy, she'll never clear her conscience — or her name.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Megan grew up moving around the Midwest and is now an English teacher (grades 8-12). I love that she won the Book Love Foundation grant and received $2,000 worth of books to add to her classroom library (such a wonderful teacher!). 'Silent Sister' is her debut novel (and I hope there will be more books by Megan!). Here's our little interview with Megan Davidhizar!

OUR LITTLE INTERVIEW

1. Okay, I'm diving into this immediately. That twist! I'm trying not to spoil the book but I have to ask… did you know beforehand you wanted to have this twist or did it occur to you when writing the story?

The twist is what I thought of first! Every decision about the book was made with that in mind. I thought of other books I really enjoyed and set out to give readers the same feeling I had while reading those.

2. Why did you decide to write a YA mystery novel about two sisters?

Before this, I wrote fantasy novels, but as it turns out, building worlds is really hard, and I am better at killing people. Mystery was another genre of books I loved, so I thought I’d try it out, and you can’t get stakes much higher than a missing sister.

3. Which part - Grace or Maddy - was easier for you to write and why?

Maddy was significantly easier for me to write. I am an introvert at heart like Maddy, and I have been hurt by friends like she has. Other introverts also connect deeply with her, and I love hearing that. However, it was also harder to come up with events for the trip they go on to keep the story interesting. I had to add shenanigans: the big slip n slide, floor is lava, bonfire, and of course, the pranks!

4. Our fourth question is not really related to the book, we like to change things a bit. So here’s our fourth question: In your book, there are poems to give something more to the character and the story. If you had to write poems for another character (in any book), which character would it be and what kind of poems?

Ooh, this is tough. I was inspired by 'We Were Liars' and 'Monday’s Not Coming' for this book, and I’d like to write poems for Cady to express the depth of her pain and Claudia to capture how she describes characters as colors.

5. Can you already give us a hint about your next book?

Hmm, I’m not sure how much I can say about my next book yet, but it is another standalone YA thriller. More people lie, and at least one dies.

Bonus question: what are you reading at the moment?

I am honored to be reading an advanced copy of Paula Gleeson’s upcoming adult thriller Boney Creek. I loved 'Original Twin', her debut, so I can’t wait to scream about this book too!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Silent Sisters is a YA mystery/thriller, one you want to finish in one go. I enjoyed reading about the characters, I found them very human. At times, I felt sad for Maddy how insecure she felt (I wanted to shake her to stop her from having these thoughts). The poems gave an extra touch/an extra dimension to the character - which I loved! The characters had to work on themselves and grow as a person, you don't see this often in a thriller - so I found this well-done!

Thank you so much Megan for this great interview! I can't wait for your next book!
